Awesome sky and not as windy as I expected on arrival at 1pm. Left the hill about an hour later with another Advance pilot. Later joined by a Nova pilot. These guys climbed to cloudbase but the clouds were too black and too big for me to get any closer than 500 ft. below. Drift was quite easterly with the M4 and Membury Services providing a good trigger point. Two or three thermals later I landed in a stiff breeze. As I made my way across a field I saw a cow leave her mates and come trotting towards me. On closer inspection I realised she was a he. It was a big black bull! With 20 kilos on my back and about 25 yards to the stile, I had no option but to face it. He proceeded to paw the ground and snort. I tried to reason with him but he continued towards me slowly. I walked backwards through a few cow pats, he continued to move forwards, I continued to appease him. When, at last, I thought I would make the stile, I turned and ran the last few feet. An exciting day, in many ways! I got back to a deserted Liddy, after three hitches. Needless to say the drivers were entertained. |
